Hazardous and easily ignitable substances

It is forbidden to send hazardous and easily ignitable substances in the postal consignments.

Explosives and blasting substances

 
Definition:
Any chemical compounds, mixtures or substances, capable of producing an explosion or which in use can suddenly heat and release gas. It is prohibited to send all explosives and blasting substances.

 

For example:
nitro-glycerine, blasting caps, fireworks, igniters, fuses, lighters, flares, ammunition etc.

 

Gases (compressed, liquid or dissolved under pressure)

 
Definition:
Non-volatile (stable) inert gases, which may not take the form of liquid at room temperature and which are dissolved in solution under the action of pressure.
It is forbidden to send:
  • compressed, flammable gases: hydrogen, ethane, methane, propane, butane, pocket lighters, cylinders for gas cookers, blow torches etc.
  • toxic compressed gases: chlorine, fluorine etc
  • non-flammable compressed gases: carbon dioxide, nitrogen, neon, fire-extinguishers containing these gases etc.
  • aerosols.
 

IGNITABLE LIQUIDS

 
Definition:
Liquids, mixtures of liquids or liquids containing solids in solution or suspension which form ignitable vapours. It is prohibited to send all liquids which flashing point in a closed container equals less than 55 ?C.

 

For example:
acetone, benzene, cleaning compounds (detergents), petrol, lighter fuel, paint thinners and removers, petroleum, solvents etc.
 

EASILY IGNITABLE SOLID SUBSTANCES

 
Definition:
Solid materials which can to ignite because of friction, absorption of moisture, spontaneous chemical reactions or retained heat from manufacturing or processing, or which can be easily ignited and burn vigorously.

 

For example:
matches, calcium carbide, cellulose, products containing nitrates, metallic magnesium, nitro-cellulose based film, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, sodium hydride, zinc powder,
 

OXIDISING MATERIALS AND ORGANIC PEROXIDES

 
Definition:
These substances are self-lighting, although not always, and they may cause or contribute to the combustion of other substances. They may also explode, react dangerously with other substances and be hazardous to your health.

 

For example:
bromides, chlorates, components of fibreglass repair kits, nitrates, per-chlorates, permanganates, peroxides etc.
 

TOXIC AND CONTAGIOUS SUBSTANCES, OTHER MEDICAL WASTE AND MATERIALS

 
Definition:
Toxic substances are those which are liable either to cause death or serious injury or to harm human health, if swallowed, inhaled or by skin contact. Also toxic materials are those which contain microorganisms or toxins of microorganisms or materials which are able to spread diseases.

 

For example:
arsine, beryllium, cyanide, fluoride, hydrogen, selenite, salts of mercury, yperite, nitrogen dioxide, pathogenic material, rat poison, serum, vaccines etc.
 

RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS

 
Definition:
All materials which specific activity exceeds 74 Becquerels per kilogram (0.002 Mikrocurie per gram). It is prohibited to send any radioactive materials.

 

For example:
fissile material (uranium 235, etc.); radioactive waste materials, uranium or thorium ores etc.
 

CORROSIVE SUBSTANCES

 
Definition:
Substances which can cause severe damage as they are making chemical impact on living tissues, other freight or transport vehicles.

 

For example:
aluminium chloride, caustic soda, corrosive cleaning fluid, rust removing / protection means, corrosive paint remover, electrical batteries, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulphuric acid etc.
 

MISCELLANEOUS HAZARDOUS GOODS

 
Definition:
Substances that cause danger or hazard which can’t be classified according to the above mentioned categories.

 

For example:
asbestos, dry ice, magnetised material with a magnetic field strength of 0.159 A or more at a distance of 2.1 metres from the package etc.
